Ajith’s Mankatha to release on Independence Day?
It appears that actor Ajith’s upcoming landmark 50th film ‘Mankatha’ might finally hit the screens all over the State and elsewhere on Independence Day i.e. on 15th August. The script is said to be revolving around the ‘betting menace’ which is done on a large scale in real life whenever India plays against major cricketing nations at home and abroad.
The one-liner is said to be a rags-to-riches story of a commoner who starts off as a penniless man and then goes on to become the kingpin of the world of betting. The script is likely to narrate in detail as to how noted (and tainted?) cricketers like Mohammed Azharuddin Ajay Jadeja got into the ‘betting racket’ and lost their places in the national team.
The high-point of the script is that it unties the knot as to how the whole ‘betting episode’ came to light in Indian cricket. Some sequences have been shot in exact locations where betting usually takes place. These are major hotels and restaurants in Hyderabad, it is learnt. The film is likely to have its official audio-launch soon; 1st August is tentatively mentioned as the date of launch of the music.
One song starring ‘Mankatha’ had already been released which has become quite a rage among youths. Yuvan, the music director, had made his uncle and veteran lyricist-composer-singer-film-maker Gangai Amaren write this particular song. True to Yuvan’s prediction, the song has become a huge hit now. As many as 250 dancers are said to have performed with Ajith in this song, which has come very well, Unit sources say.

Rana title stays, assures director Ravikumar
Director K.S. Ravikumar has brushed aside media reports that the title of superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film ‘Rana’ might be changed. Reports appearing in the vernacular press said that the title could be changed as it didn’t prove ‘lucky’ for the superstar who fell ill on the evening of same day on which the film was launched (on 29th April).
Reacting to those reports, Ravikumar said that the reports were baseless. The director, who has already given two mega-hits in ‘Muthu’ and ‘Padaiyappa’ with superstar Rajini, would be directing him for the third time in the period flick ‘Rana’. Incidentally, Rajini would be essaying three roles in the film, something he hadn’t done after his super-hit film ‘Moondrum Mugam’ in the early eighties.
Rajini spent more than two months, during which time his fans and well-wishers were very anxious, in two Chennai hospitals and in Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth hospital before recuperating from the kidney-related and other ailments. The star returned to Chennai on the night of 13th July to a rousing reception from his fans and the public.
Ravikumar revealed that he had been meeting Rajini almost on a ‘daily basis’ after the latter’s return to Chennai from Singapore. “Neither did Rajini bring up the issue of changing the title nor did I take up the matter with him. I can only say that these rumours claiming a change in title are baseless. Both the title and the script are Rajini’s; as such, the title ‘Rana’ stands as it is,” he assured.

Gautham Menon patronizes Samantha in a big way
Director Gautham Vasudev Menon has the habit of repeating a heroine if he likes her performance. Cinematographer-director Balu Mahendra had this habit when he repeated heroines like Shobha, Archana and Mounika in more than one film. Likewise, Menon too has repeated Jyothika in films like ‘Kakka Kakka’, ‘Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu’ and ‘Pachchaikili Muthucharam’.
Menon then cast Sameera Reddy in films like ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ and ‘Nadunisi Naaygal’. Samantha appears to be the latest actress who has caught Menon’s attention in a big way. Samantha played a brief role in Menon’s ‘Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya’ and played Trisha’s role in the Telugu version of the film, made by Menon.
Samantha had been booked by Ravivarman for ‘Moscowin Kaveri’ and in ‘Baana Kathadi’ opposite Atharva, son of the late actor Murali. The delay of the release of these two films made it look like ‘VTV’ was Samantha’s debut film in Tamil. Samantha’s claim in this regard obviously didn’t go down well with the directors of the above-said two films.
Meanwhile, Menon has again cast Samantha as heroine opposite Jiiva in an upcoming film. This would be the first time that the director would be directing the talented Jiiva in a film. Samantha is said to have signed along the dotted lines even before the script was narrated to her.
Isn’t that what is called blind faith?
